The knowledge of how to read the Egyptian Hieroglyphics was lost around the Medieval times. Many people tried to decipher it. But, it never made sense. Until the discovery of the Rosetta Stone in July 1799. It had three languages written on it, Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphics, Demotic, and Ancient Greek. The code breakers were Thomas Young and Jean Francis Champollion.

III.

My experience in Siwa was really fun and amazing. We got to do all sorts of cool things with the family we stayed with. Like swimming, exploring an old fortress, playing games and other fun things. One of my favorites was pretty much everything we did together. One day we went to a secret spring with a new friend Ussef. The spring was a lot of fun and he packed a good picnic. On the way home he timed it just right so the sun was setting over the lake.

IV.

Pyramid conspiracy

Here is my idea of how the pyramids were built. What if they used Magnets. So how it would work is the ground under the pyramids had a lot of magnetite , so if you got another rock the magnetic force would push against each other and and the rock would float above the ground. Also under ground magnets went down to the Nile so all they had to do was push a rock onto the floating platform and use magnets to move to the pyramid. From there they could put it in place with ropes.

I love scuba diving

It is amazing to see the fish are thriving.

The coral is so pretty,

Some fish are itty-bitty.

There are creatures everywhere’

Scuba diving makes you feel like you are floating in the air.

Some fish like to remain unseen,

But, they are usually mean.

Dive Journal:

Location: Lighthouse bay in front of sea dancer

Conditions: Air temp 21C, high tide, 6 inch swells

Terrain: Coral gardens, sandy bottom, sea grass patches

Observations: I saw a starry puffer fish 4 meters deep, it was 2 ft long and about 10 inches thick. It was still on the bottom of the sea maybe it was laying eggs

I saw a long sea cucumber that looked like a snake. I also saw a shorter one that was grey and a small black one.

I saw some lion fish but they were all hiding under big tables of coral. I only saw one in the open, I think they only like windy conditions.

Location: 3 pools, Wadi Gani, Dahab Egypt, 10:30 am

Conditions: sunny sandy beach with small waves

Observations:

We saw a sea turtle at depth of 6 meters. It was eating, it had a mossy back. It was 1 meter long and 1 meter wide. I saw a giant starry puffer perhaps laying eggs like before. I also saw a blue spotted sting ray swimming.

15 Facts about the Sea turtles

1  Sea turtles have been on Earth for over a hundred million years so they've been here since the  Dino sores..(sp. Dinosaurs 🙂)

2  Turtles don't have teeth so they use their hard beaks to eat.

3 the beaks of  are made of keratin

4 sea turtle shells are made of over 50 bones

5 they have light spongy bones to help them float in the water

6 the first few years of a sea turtle's life is called The Lost Years

7 the lost years can last up to 20 years and it's the first years of their life

8 The Lost Years is the is the least thing we know about the  sea turtles

9  the smallest  sea turtles way up to 90 kg and 70 cm long

10 the largest turtles is the leatherback turtle it was up to 50 kg and 180 cm

11 The largest sea turtle ever found was in Wales and it was a female leatherback that weighed 60 kg and 2.5 m

12 1/1000  baby sea turtles make it to adulthood.

13 Female leatherback turtles make a weird sound when they lay eggs it's kind of like a human burping

14 before this to sea turtle has ever swam is  13,000  km over 647 days

15 Turtles' amazing ability to navigate comes from the strong sense of the Earth's magnetic fields.

I think world schooling and Egypt was a great idea. Because we could do a lot of fun stuff like sandboarding and Camel riding and seeing cool ancient Egyptian things. like the pyramids, Valley of the Kings, Valley of the Queens and tombs of the noble and temples  for different gods. Like  some temples were for Horace some were for Sobek and some for hathor. There were also temples for two or three or four or five different gods. We can't do anything like this in New Mexico except for sand boarding. Also we got to learn how to scuba dive. And saw some really cool things. Also we did snorkeling and freediving. We saw a lot of coral fish and different colored Coral. One of my favorite Scuba snorkeling and free diving sites was called Islands because it had a  a lot of super bright Coral and a lot of fish. We saw a big puffer fish and clownfish and stingrays and also in a different place called three lagoons we saw a sea turtle!!!! We also went to a site call the coral gardens at the Canyon and saw a flounder. I did 10 dives in Egypt so far. I'm glad we came to Egypt and are doing World school because we got to learn how to scuba dive and see all the ancient Egyptian stuff.

Ruggles, your writing is so description. I had to look up how dates grow on trees to understand your image of impaled dates. It's perfect. And thank you for explaining the importance of the discovery of the Rosetta Stone. I did not know that.

Your Scuba Diving poem is cool. With poetry it is amazing it is to see how much information can be communicated in a few words.

Your Pyramid Conspiracy was fascinating - floating magnetic platforms. Did you have a challenge to use a chemical element to describe how they were formed.

It is clear that you really enjoyed scuba diving. I am imaging a Starry Puffer Fish that big and the gorgeous corals. I have snorkeled and…

About Wide Horizons

What if we found the mute button on the cultural messaging around hustle and money being the only currency to respect/strive for. What if we spent a year listening to other messages from humanity? What if we experienced ourselves outside our bubble of privilege? What if we shared a moment of togetherness in this finite space of childhood.   Our idea to “world school” was born from a year of asking what really matters to us in this moment of time. We realized that while nothing in life is guaranteed that we currently have an abundance of privilege. Health, savings, a home support system, a love for one another and a deep desire to create meaningful experiences together gave us the courage to say yes to this project.
